At the markets in the north east they have those plastic mesh bags the
fish monger puts your clams in. Any thoughts about putting the clams in
the mesh bag in boiling water to steam them?

Eliminates the need for tongs, anything un healthy about the plastic?

No much room for the clams to open. Tongs? Use a colander.

The broth is the best part, chop up some celery and add a little
butter...don't want to waste that!

bingo - put 'em in an oven save dish and toss 'em into a
500F oven. When they open, they're done. - no muss - no fuss
- still have the juice. Either that or on a very hot grill,
but you'll loose most of the juices.

If you can't beat 'em, they're not tied down properly.

You have long road ahead of you to making a decent clam dish if that
is a serious question.

That's boiling clams, not steaming them. I've never heard of (or
even considered) boiling clams.
